Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition of widespread pain and profound fatigue and some of the symptoms of may often be mistaken for those that occur in many gynaecological conditions.

The pain tends to be felt as diffuse aching or burning often described as head to toe. It may be worse at some times than others. It may also change location, usually becoming more sever in parts of the body that are used the most.

The fatigue ranges from tiredness to flu like exhaustion. It can come and go and people can feel drained of all energy.  Symptoms can include, un refreshing sleep, headaches, irritable bowel, muscle spasms, facial pain, itching skin, numbness or tingling in hands or feet, irritable bladder, clumsiness, sensation of swelling, chest pains, lack of concentration and memory lapses. Of course, all of these symptoms can be found with other illnesses and do not necessarily point to fibromyalgia.

  1. Hi, I am due to have full abdominal surgery in September. I have Fibromyalgia and I am worried about how the operation will affect my symptoms. I have coped with Fibro for several years now and have managed to control my symptoms with medication and listening to my body. I have maintained a full time job and a reasonably active life. But I am worried about the pain I may experience after the op. If I get stressed or exercise to much I can have a flare up of the fibro and wonder if I need to mention this to the consultant. Has anyone been through this operation with Fibro?
