When will I go through the menopause?

Question: I had my hysterectomy 3 years ago and I kept my ovaries. I was wondering how do you know when your going into menopause if you have had a hysterectomy?

Our Answer: There are two alternative scenarios, the first is that you will go into the menopause a year or two earlier than you might have done if it had been natural (ask your mother when she started hers if you can as this is a good indicator for when you might have started).

However, around 50% of women who have a hysterectomy that leaves their ovaries intact will go through the menopause within five years regardless of their age. You can get a blood oestrogen test which will give you an indication if you are menopausal although you do need to bear in mind that these tests aren’t hugely accurate. It can be helpful to have a blood oestrogen test before a hysterectomy as this will give a base line reference for later.

  1. I had hot flashes and such at 28 and went to 31 when I had a hysterectomy but they left the ovaries. Every issue went away shortly after. Now at 54 I’m getting hotflashes again. Could I be going through menopause again? I received no hormone replacement therapy. I have had to go vegan and with celiac, watch the gluten. I also started to eat a lot of organic soybeans in the last several months (about 10-12 pounds or 4-5kg a month) as I make soymilk and eat the pulp (okara) as a porridge.

  2. It sounds menopausal to me Stephanie and a check with your GP on your blood oestrogen levels would be advisable. The alternative would be something along the lines of thyroid issues as that has common symptoms.

  3. I had a hysterectomy when I was 22 years old. I had everything except one ovary taken out, which was very cystic and the doctor wanted to take it out, but where I was so young, she decided to leave it in. I also had severe endometrious. I have recently turned 30, and I am experiencing depression, mood swings, hot flashes, crying for no reason every day, and I have cysts on the only ovary I have come up once to twice a month. I am not in the mood for sex with my husband, and I am not sure if I could be going through menopause or premenopause??? Any thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks.

  4. I had a hysterectomy the Dr. took everything except my ovaries 7 years ago. I was 33 at the time. I am now 40 and have been experiencing hot flashes and mood swings slightly for last 1 1/2. I am now having symptom’s like tender breasts, night sweats, hot flashes during the day, mood swings, crying for no reason and bloating in full swing daily. Could I be in Pre Menopause or Menopause? Not really excited about the HRT, but maybe some natural remedies. Some days I feel like I’m going crazy. Please help or advise.

I also had cysts on my ovaries since the age of 12 and sever endometriosis and a uterine cyst removed that cause the hysterectomy. Could any of those have a roll in this?
