Heavy bleeding – an inherited disorder?

There are some indications that women who are heavy bleeders may actually have an inherited bleeding disorder. A study of women that suffered from heavy bleeding who had additional symptoms such as bruising and other aemorrhaging found that 1 in 6 lacked some chemical needed for clotting. A new drug is being developed that may help in a small number of cases.(The Lancet; [1998]; Vol 351:1901; 485-9)
