Do YOU have business social intelligence?

This was the question I was asking myself when I was preparing for a presentation to the Brilliant BusinessXchange a couple of weeks ago.  In fact, how do you measure it and yes, I know that I’ve ‘stolen’ the concept of social intelligence from Daniel Goleman even though I use those theories but apply to online business instead, but anyway, back to the question in hand ……

It’s hard, because social intelligence is a psychological theory which considers what makes people act in certain ways in society.  This is a very simplistic way of looking at it, but it will suffice for the time being.

To be socially intelligent – from my perspective – you need to exhibit the following seven characteristics AND have a reasonably high degree of understanding about how the online social networks such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter really work.  The characteristics are:

  • Empathy
  • Listening
  • Social Cognition
  • Synchrony
  • Self Presentation
  • Influence
  • Concern
The presentation below was designed to ask questions that featured each of these traits and to give a possible explanation of how they might work in the social networks.  Oh, and I also added a light-hearted quiz too ….. enjoy!
