April was claimed as National Poetry Month in the United States back in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets. They have celebrated every year since. According to their website thousands of businesses and non-profit organisations also get involved and participate by holding things like readings, running poetry festivals, creating stunning book displays, holding workshops, and a myriad of other events.
One unique feature that I particularly like though is the Poem in your Pocket Day which takes place on the 26th April this year and is the day that millions of Americans will carry a poem they love around in their pocket for the whole day.
Now, you may wonder where I’m going with this, given that I’m based in the UK and British, but it just so happens that I’ve recently launched a writing competition for POETS and Authors too. It is open to anyone from around the world as long as they are a woman … so sorry guys, this one’s not for you.
The prize for EACH category (that is Poetry and Short Story) is £400 and that’s about $640 in US dollars. Not only that though, there will be an anthology published at the end of this year for the ten best entries in each category too, so not only could you win you could also be published too.
Poems and Short Stories can be about any subject that is relevant to women (apart from horror or erotica) because the anthology will be published by Crystal Clear Books in association with the Hysterectomy Association. You may be thinking at this stage, well that’s not going to mean much but the truth is we’ll be marketing the anthology heavily to the users of the website (all a couple of million of them each year) and in every online bookstore we can access.
We’ll be also be doing things like running giveaways on Goodreads.com, we’ll offer it as a prize in competitions; we’ll be interviewing each of our winners and posting information about them and their blogs (if they have one) on sites that are visited by hundreds of thousands of women each year.
Hopefully, all that will be enough to tempt the latent (or visible) poet in you to try your hand at entering our competition.
To enter you just have to visit: http://www.hysterectomy-association.org.uk/index.php/the-hysteria-2012-short-story-and-poetry-writing-competition/ where you will find all the details and a set of rules and you can also see who our judges will be too.
