My Amazing Recovery – Karyn’s Story

Less than 24 hrs from awaking from surgery 12/6. Amazing! I had a Da Vinci supra cervical hysterectomy for fibroids, excess bleeding and prolapse. My surgery was from noon to 5:30p.m. I moved myself from the recovery cart onto my bed in my room at 8 p.m. I was up to edge of bed at 10 p.m. and up walking to the bathroom for my first urine at 11 p.m.I walked the length of the hall by 1 a.m. I made my own hot tea at the nourishment center at 5 a.m. I have four glued incision sites, 3 small & 1 larger on left abdomen.

I am using an abdominal binder which is my best friend right now. I am taking only ibuprofen for pain. I have no vaginal bleeding. The hospital gave me simethicone chewable for gas prevention and ondansetron suppository for nausea after anesthesia. Before surgery I was given a couple ounces of water with 2 aka-seltzer tabs for gas pain prevention. I was able to pass gas one time before being released at 10:30 a.m. on 12/7. AMAZING!

My best advice is to ask for the binder! Take only as much medication as allows you to move freely and not be too sleepy. If you aren’t yet able to walk then move your legs and knees. When you stand, look straight ahead and keep your eyes open. Hold a pillow to your abdomen for extra support, this helps! Drink a lot of hot tea to soothe your throat which will be achy and dry, this will encourage the urine I alternated the hot tea with ice water. I took my own lemon and ginger tea bags and peppermint chews. Fluids are your friend! Anticipate your new life- pain free doing the activities you love!
