Hysteria Writing Competition Judges – Sophie Duffy

Each year we interview our volunteer judges for the Hysteria Writing Competition and I’d like to introduce Sophie Duffy.

Tell me one thing no-one knows about you

My great-great-great grandfather made Napoleon’s coffin (actually some people know that fact but it’s so good I need to share it with the world).

What do you enjoy reading the most and why?

A story that takes me to another place and a narrator with a fresh turn of phrase.

If there was one book or piece of writing you wish you had written what would it be?

‘Fingersmith’ by Sarah Waters. For the big shock moment and stunning writing.

What prompted you to volunteer to be a judge in the Hysteria Writing Competition?

I was a judge last year and really engaged with the whole process and was encouraged by the quality of the entries. I truly believe you learn so much about your own writing through reading other writers’ work.

If there was a film of your life who would play you and why?

Amy Poehler – I know she is American but I love her geekiness.

Where can we find out more about you?

Author of The Generation Game and This Holey Life. Most recent publication is Cat Walks, a short story collection with my colleagues at CreativeWritingMatters.
