This week, I’d like to introduce Rory Z Fulcher to the Thursday Throng author interview sofa with his new book Hypno Fasting. Rory is a professional hypnotherapist and stage/street hypnotist, best-selling author and international hypnosis trainer. He’s also one of the HypnoBros, a founding director of HypnoTC: The Hypnotherapy Training Company, as well as a director for the online hypnosis training company Hypnosis-Courses.com.
What is one thing people wouldn’t usually know about you?
Something that surprises quite a lot of people is that I am quite an introvert. Although, as a hypnosis trainer, I speak to large groups and am generally perceived as highly outgoing and animated during conversations and interactions, in ‘real life’, I’m quite the opposite. If I’m in a social setting with lots of people talking, I’ll usually be the quiet one, chilling out in the corner, listening to the conversations and only joining in when prompted (or if I have something interesting or entertaining to add). It’s such a contrast to how I appear when teaching or working with clients, that people really wouldn’t expect it!
What is the best review of your work you’ve had?
As a non-fiction writer, as well as a hypnosis trainer and mentor, I always like to read reviews from people who’ve learned from my books, and even more where those learnings have resulted in tangible benefits. Some of my favourite reviews of Hypno-Fasting have included ‘Ross’, who lost over 2 stone, and James who lost 8lbs in 10 days using the weight loss principles contained in the book.
With my other books, which are all about learning how to do hypnosis, I have so many fantastic reviews, that it’s hard to pick a best one, but with my most recent book, ‘The Stage & Street Hypnosis Handbook’, I reached out to a number of prolific hypnotists, and received a number of glowing reviews, even from some ‘celebrity’ hypnotists such as Richard Barker and ‘America’s Got Talent’ hypnotist, Chris Jones. Those meant a lot!
What is the worst review of your work you’ve had?
I don’t tend to get that many non-five-star reviews (phew), but if I do they tend come from two categories of reviewer. The first are those who can’t put written instructions into real-world practice. For some reason, there are people out there who expect to fully ‘know’ how to do something after reading a single book about it, and without putting any effort in to actually practice. Those people are, unfortunately, quick to leave reviews saying ‘it’ didn’t work, when in fact ‘they’ didn’t work at ‘it’!
The other type of reader that I get grumpy reviews from are those who expect all instructional non-fiction books to be written in a dull textbook style, where the focus is solely on a transfer of information. Unfortunately for those readers, I write the way that I speak, and I also love to entertain my readers! Sometimes I write using slang words and colloquialisms. Sometimes I use ‘internet speak’ in my books. Sometimes I even swear! *GASP* (lol). However, as we know, some people are more easily upset and offended than others. So, if you’re an aspiring author and you have a small minority of people being picky about your writing style, when the vast majority love it and actively ask you to write more, remember this one simple piece of advice: Who gives a shit what they think? Keep doing what you do and ignore the haters, because you’re awesome!
Are there any occupational hazards to being a writer?
I have had many different experiences with writing my books, and each book has been different. My first book, ‘The Instant Hypnosis & Rapid Inductions Guidebook’ was super easy to write, it flowed from my brain into my keyboard within mere days. Later books (and later editions of older books) have taken more planning, more thought and more research to ensure they’re delivering the right message. So, don’t expect writing a book to be a super easy process, but also, don’t worry too much if you find it’s easier than you expected!
The one ‘occupational hazard’ that springs to mind isn’t really a hazard, but it took me off guard the first time it happened. It was the first time someone asked me to sign a copy of my book for them. I sell the majority of my books on Amazon, so I got used to not really being a part of that process. However, I also started to run live hypnosis training courses after my first book came out, and I was just rocking up at training venues with a case full of books, hoping to sell a few to my course attendees (which I usually did). Then one time, as I was handing a book over, this young guy sheepishly asked me to sign the book for him. I was almost speechless at the time (which doesn’t happen often), but it was definitely a new and pleasant experience to have! Another piece of advice for authors is, if you get to the point where you’re signing books for your fans, don’t let it go to your head… well, not ALL the way at least! lol
Have you ever wished you could do, or be, something else?
After leaving school I tried a number of different jobs, and none of them really did it for me. They were either too much effort for too little reward, or just down right mind-numbing! Before I set out on the path to where I am today, I worked in an office as an administrator, I trained to be a fitness instructor, I was a barman, a factory worker, a hotel housekeeper, a charity worker, a refuse collector, and even a trainee financial advisor… It’s when I decided to turn my hobby of hypnosis into a full-time career that I truly found my place in the world. Then, when I started writing books and teaching others how to get the same results that I was getting, I found I enjoyed that EVEN MORE, and by proxy could help a lot more people by training other hypnotists and hypnotherapists all around the world. So, would I want to do another job? I don’t think so!
Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?
Tip 1: Start now, don’t put it off. If you’re pushed for time, MAKE TIME. If writing is something that you’re serious about doing, then commit to it. The sooner you get started, the more time you’ll have to become truly great.
Tip 2: Plan ahead, or don’t. As a non-fiction writer, planning ahead is an absolute must. I need to know what I need to include, and the information I need to convey to the reader. I personally start out with my contents list, and include every topic/element that I want in the book as a chapter, heading or sub-heading. Sure, that contents list may be added to or modified later, but it’s a great starting point. If you’re a fiction writer, that may not work for you, so if not, then just go with the flow – if you don’t NEED a plan to do some great work, then don’t worry about it!
Tip 3: Write about something that you actually give a shit about. Don’t just try and crank out some money-making book that you could care less about. Get involved in your book, be interested in your topic, because if you are, your enthusiasm will come through to the reader, and that’s what makes a book great (yes, even a non-fiction one)!
How do you remain sane whilst writing?
Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll – hey, caffeine’s a drug too you know!
In all seriousness, when I write, I need to have peace and quiet, or at least limited distractions. So, I like to take myself away into an empty room with a desk and closer the door in order to hunker down and write. If I don’t have an empty room available and the family are milling around noisily (as families are wont to do), I put on some noise cancelling headphones, face my the back of my laptop at the least well-travelled point in the room, and stick on some ambient relaxation music to drown out the background noise.

What has been the best experience of your life so far?
I must say, one of my all-time best experiences actually lasted for a few years. After trying my hand at various careers and becoming disillusioned with everything, I packed my bags and got a one-way ticket to Australia.
I then spent the next three years backpacking (and working) my way around Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia. I sunbathed on desert beaches, swam with green turtles, bungee jumped at the world’s first bungee site, experienced culinary delights (and horrors), enjoyed local wildlife (which in Aus and Asia is definitely an interesting experience) and jumped out of a plane 19,000ft above a glacier in Franz Josef, NZ, to mention but a few of the fantastic experiences those countries have to offer.
If you ever get the opportunity to travel, I say that you 100% should. I went on my own, made hundreds of friends and had the best time of my life. You only get one life, so enjoy it while you can!
Do you have a favourite writing resource to share with my readers and other writers?
My favourite resource as an author has been Google! If you want to learn how to do something, you Google it. If you want to know how to format your Microsoft Word document in a specific way, the info is there, in both text and video formats. If you want to know what you need to do to self-publish your book, or how to design cover art, or how to market yourself, or how to approach people to stock your book, or pretty much anything else for that matter, the answer is just a few clicks away! Google is an author’s best friend.
Google pointed me towards another great resource that I have used numerous times in my career as an author: https://www.fiverr.com This is a website where you can outsource various tasks for as little as five US dollars! I have had book covers designed (such as the cover for Hypno-Fasting), I have had cartoon artwork created (such as in my kids book ‘Sam the Sleepy Sheep’, which helps kids go to sleep), I had someone re-format ALL of my kindle books so I could sell them on another e-book website ( https://www.smashwords.com), I’ve had logos designed and animated, professional voice-overs recorded for adverts, and the list goes on! At the end of the day, time is money, so if you can outsource something at a relatively low cost that will save you hours of valuable time, then do it!
As an author, especially if you’re self-publishing, make use of modern technology. Make use of your magical ability to connect to people all around the world and to get information in seconds. Embrace it, and it will help you get to where you want to be.
