How many unnecessary hysterectomies?

Almost 30,000 women in the UK have a hysterectomy to manage heavy bleeding (menorrhagia), it has been reported that many of these women could have been offered alternative treatments that are less invasive and are less aggressive.  The VALUE national hysterectomy study looked at women who were having hysterectomies for non-malignant indications between 1994 and 1995 and concluded that the risk of complications increased with more invasive surgery and that the recuperation period was similarly affected.
