helen chambersWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

I was painfully shy as a child – now, as a part-time teacher, I have to pretend to be an extrovert in the classroom!

Are the names of your characters important to you?

It’s really important to get the names of characters correct – I have occasionally changed them late on in a piece of writing if I haven’t been happy with them. And of course, you need to remember to begin them with different letters and have different numbers of syllables in them to help the reader differentiate.

Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?

Losing track of time and missing meals because you’ve become so engrossed in writing.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Newspaper articles, overheard conversations, things that happen to me and friends and family, anecdotes people tell, memories

What was the most important thing you learned at school?

To read and enjoy stories of all kinds. You can’t write well without reading lots!
