Public Patient Involvement opportunities for researchers

What is PPI?

PPI stands for Public Patient Involvement and is a key focus for the NHS in the UK. The Hysterectomy Association can help women’s health researchers meet the growing need for PPI (public patient involvement) in their funded research studies that include involvement, engagement and participation in health and social care research that extends beyond taking part in clinical trials.

INVOLVE, the NHS advisory group that support PPI in health and social research defines public (patients, relatives and members of the general public) involvement as “research being carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them”.

How can the Hysterectomy Association help researchers?

Public Patient Involvement cuts across many different areas of the research life cycle and the Hysterectomy Association can provide researchers interested in Women’s Health in a number of different ways.

  1. Adviser. Providing advice and guidance on current and future research studies and how to improve services in the future proposed within research organisations
  2. Co-applicant. The association can be a co-applicant for research funding submissions. We can provide expert guidance about how to engage with and involve members of the public and women with health issues. We can support a research team by providing access to our mailing lists and data from our research survey’s. We can also be a critical friend on a project steering group providing advice and guidance about the research methodologies proposed.
  3. Recruitment. We can help recruit women to clinical trials directly via our extensive membership and mailing lists.
  4. Training. We can provide training to your research teams in engagement methodologies using online tools and services such as Twitter, Facebook and mailing lists.
  5. Dissemination. We can also provide dissemination of research findings to the broader public via our website, social accounts and mailing lists to help meet project funding requirements.
  6. Panel member. Research proposal reviews for the public patient perspective.
