Meeting Debbie McLeod, author of Best Friends Forever: Practical Steps and Wisdom to Ease Pet Loss
This week, I’d like to introduce Debbie McLeod, a hypnotherapist, spiritual coach, counsellor, teacher of authentic empowerment and spiritual development; who has also written the book Best Friends Forever.
What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?
That I am shy
What is the best review you have ever had about your work?
“I found working with Debbie to be both comforting and cathartic. It was so wonderful to talk about my darling babies with someone who didn’t get uncomfortable when I cried or try to change the subject. Through her thoughtful questions, and gentle murmurs of understanding and sympathy, Debbie helped me recall all the things that made Maggie, Pinky and Ferdie so very special. She took my most precious remembrances of my three kitties and created a loving poem that so accurately captured their individual personalities, silly quirks and loving sweetness. I cry each time I read it because its just so them. Thank you, Debbie for your understanding your compassion and your amazing gift in this poem. I will treasure it always. AND NOW IT HAS WON AN AWARD!”
What was the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?
To have to go back after 2 months of writing the draft and re-write some chapters. I had to leave it for a while until I felt the energy was right to go and re-write by trusting myself in this process.
Are you jealous of other writers?
Never, there is no point. If anything is meant to be, it will be. I put my book into the Hay House Writers Competition; I did not win but had great feedback from Hay House. The person who won, it was the right time for her book. My time may come through this book, it may not, but it will come. We always have our ‘right times’. When we celebrate for another we celebrate for ourselves.
Where do you find your inspiration?
From life experiences, my intuition, family and friends and especially animals and people have I worked with.
Have you ever had to learn new skills and tricks or attempted impossible feats in order to get a book finished?
In the two years it took. I sold my home, moved twice and left a job and the book just waited for me to pick it up and put it down and pick it up again. It’s my first book, so I did not know the whole process of writing, editing, printing, publishing, it’s been a whole new journey.
How did you choose a title for your book?
It came inspiringly one day and fitted because I love the Brand Forever Friends with the bears and this title reminded me of the softness of animals and our relationships with them.
Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?
Keep going, find book clubs, encouraging and supportive people, allow yourself to just write and then go back and check what you have written. Create good energy techniques before you start. Carry a note book with you. I did most of my initial writing in coffee shops.
What was the best experience you have ever had in your life?
There are loads. But one was when I started my mediumship training, I was in awe when working with this energy of spirit and it has never left me.
What is your favourite TV moment of all time?
Only Fools and Horses – Dellboy and when he leaned on the bar, but it wasn’t there, natural and hilarious.
