Meeting Nancy Golinski, author of Exercise Your Way to a Happy Hysterectomy
Those of you who have followed my blog for a while may well know that I also run a women’s health website called The Hysterectomy Association, and that one of my own best selling books is called 101 Handy Hints for a Happy Hysterectomy (yes, really it is!) so how could not embrace Nancy when she got in touch. Her book is so relevant to my audience and it’s so well timed too. Ladies, in particular, I’d like to introduce you all to Nancy …..
I’m the author of several books on hysterectomy and I also run The Hysterectomy Association. I’ve been doing this for almost 20 years and over that time have heard pretty much everything there is to hear about women’s experiences of hysterectomy. Nancy’s book is needed, in fact it was needed 20 years ago, and there was a time I thought about doing it myself. I’m so glad I didn’t. Nancy embraces the topic with a wide range of knowledge and insight into how women can use exercise to help them both prepare for, and then recover from, a hysterectomy.
The book has something for everyone, whether you’re a gym bunny or a confirmed couch potato. It’s full of handy hints that will make life easier and more manageable and it complements the books that are already available. In fact it’s the missing piece of the jigsaw and a must for all women facing hysterectomy.
The Nancy Golinski Interview
What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?
I’m from a family of 8 children. I’m lucky number 7 in the mix and also the youngest girl. Growing up our house was always loud, busy, and messy. I loved it but as an adult I often wonder how my parents managed.
Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?
Absolutely! All of that alone time in front of a computer can lead to mindless eating and some serious weight gain if I’m not careful. To counteract that I hide the junk food and keep the healthy snacks close at hand. This usually works until writer’s block rears its ugly head. Then I find myself leaving the computer to hunt down the goods.
Have you ever wished that you could be or do anything else instead of writing, and if so what?
I actually do something else besides writing… I’m a college professor. I love interacting with students. The younger ones are so idealistic and have such big dreams. The older ones are more down-to-earth and always make me laugh. Of course, my students aren’t thrilled that I’m a writer. They know that means I pay extra attention to their grammar. Oh, the horror!
Have you ever written naked?
Yes, but in my defence I was having some wicked hot flushes. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.
Who would you like to play you in a film of your life?
Sandra Bullock. I love her.
Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?
I thought about writing for years but never set any goals. Then my doctor told me I needed surgery and would be out of work for 6 weeks. The pure joy I felt at that moment told me how stressed my life had become. It made me re-evaluate what I wanted to do and writing was at the top of the list.
My advice is to set some writing goals and stick to them. If you write a little bit each day you will find that it gets easier, plus you will want to stay at your computer longer as the words begin to flow. A nonfiction book might be a good start because they are usually easier to publish. They also establish you as a writer which will help to launch your fiction works (and land an agent if you don’t already have one).
Have you had to learn new skills and tricks or attempted impossible feats in order to get a book finished?
I had to learn a lot of medical terms for this book, but was fortunate enough to have a friend who is a nurse practitioner and was willing to help. I also delved into the wonderful world of Mudras, which are hand yoga positions that relieve stress, pain, etc. Some of them were tricky to learn plus I was sceptical that they would work. To my surprise they did, and I still use them to this day.
Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?
I adore tea. I have one of those old fashioned steeping pots and load it up with different flavours. My favourites are citrus zinger or vanilla. I try to drink mostly herbal teas to avoid the caffeine. There are days, though, where a nice cup of hot black tea is the only way to go. Pure joy!
Are there any habits you wish you didn’t have?
I sleep too much. At night I log in a solid 9 hours and also take a nap during the day. I’ve grown quite accustomed to these snooze-fests and am cranky when I miss them. I keep thinking of all the wonderful things I would accomplish if I were more like my husband, who only clocks in about 6 hours a night. He’s pretty smug about it too.
