The Thursday Throng Author Interview and BOOK GIVEAWAY with Mike Meyer, author of Covert Dreams
I must admit that it can seem that I favour women authors in my Thursday Throng interviews as to date I’ve only interviewed one other man, the very lovely Michael Cargill; but it’s not strictly true, it’s just that few men seem to want to take part. Anyway, I have a real treat for my male readers as this week I’m hosting Mike Meyer, the author of Covert Dreams and I know that his book is doing pretty well on Amazon at the moment, so one lucky commenter is going to be in for a real treat when their free copy lands in their hands.
Hi Mike and as my second male author I’m going to be really interested to see how your answers may differ from my more usual, female interviewees. The first question I ask everyone is ‘What is One thing that No-One Normally Knows About You?’
I am a very sensitive guy. I can cry easily, but always behind closed doors, and only in front of my wife or a close relative. My sister-in-law told my wife that I am a real man’s man, and she meant it as a real compliment, and I probably am, but I also have a soft side that really comes out in private when I am emotionally sad about something. A movie, for instance, can sometimes bring tears to my eyes. (Linda’s Aside. Now that’s a mark to be proud of – one who can admit to having a side like that.)
What did the best review you ever had say about you and your work?
Let me just post a review of COVERT DREAMS recently posted on my Amazon site:
“This is the first review I’ve written for Amazon. I’m a very picky reader (that’s putting it mildly) and I tend to subscribe to the adage that if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. I’m not sure that’s the best policy in life, but it’s the one I tend to go with. This book, fortunately, has given me an opportunity to speak out. This is the best book, bar none, that I’ve read in an eon. It grabbed me by the collar and wouldn’t let me go. I read it in three sittings. The voice, the pace, the settings, the highly intriguing plot: they all grabbed me. And the great thing was there was nothing grisly or disturbing. I don’t like things like that. What I got was highly intelligent writing with a very compelling plot, and no violence. Bravo. One last point: at the end of most of the chapters the author used an unusual and effective technique that really won my respect. I felt I was in the hands of a master. Terrific book. I would recommend it to anyone.”
How did you choose a title for your book?
COVERT DREAMS begins with a series of increasingly more violent dreams that lead eventually to covert activity. The action moves from London, to Munich, and then to the burning sands of Saudi Arabia. I feel that the title truly lives up to its name.
Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?
Allowing one’s self to be adversely affected by bad reviews. People are people. We all like and dislike different things. Not everyone will like my baby, but I can’t allow that to get me down, because I absolutely love my little guy. (Linda’s Aside. Now that’s highly relevant given the post I added to the blog yesterday, and thanks for sharing it)
Have you ever wished that you could be or do anything else instead of writing, and if so what?
I did. I was a university writing professor for forty years. I taught at universities in Thailand, Saudi Arabia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and then I spent the last 25 years at a California community college, where I retired in December of 2010.
Have you ever written naked?
As a matter of fact, I did this interview naked, right after I jumped out of bed and just before I took off for my morning workout.
What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?
Ending the book. When I write, my book is my baby. I nurture it, and when it is finished and moves off to live life away from the nest, I am sad. I am happy though that COVERT DREAMS has found a nice home at Amazon Kindle along with his three siblings. (Linda’s Aside. And I believe your readers are very happy too Mike)
Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?
Write, write, write, and write. It is that simple. A writer is a person who writes. In addition, be a reader as you write. Become excited by the characters you are creating. Allow them to take you to who knows what end. It is thrilling; believe me.
What has been the best experience you have ever had in your life?
Finding true love after the death of my first wife. I feel like the luckiest person in the world two have fallen madly, heads-over-heels in love twice in one lifetime.
Are you jealous of other writers?
Why? I love my own babies. All four of them bring me immense joy, and the fifth is well on its way.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I am a keen observer of people. I am a good listener. I travel a lot. Bits and pieces of my own life have found a home in my own writing. However, the greatest inspiration I have is the wonderful things that my readers say about my work as they post reviews. Their applause for what I have created is the wind beneath my wings.
Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?
I prefer absolutely nothing while actually writing, but afterwards is a completely different story. I live in Southern California wine country, so I do enjoy good wine. At the same time, I have never ever said no to a good IPA (India Pale Ale). (Linda’s Aside. Good Man!)
