I don't know whether you are aware or not, but I'm also an author. I've written four books over the years and am currently attempting to finish my fifth, which will be on LinkedIn for business. But, that's not what I'm writing about in this post though. The reason for the post, is that I've been experimenting with simple e-commerce systems to see which ones work, which ones don't and how they all do it. I thought I'd share some of the ones I've been using with you today.
Presenting Sue Williams, an author and poet who is the founder of Your Signature Success Story and creator of the Believe! book series for women. Her own Signature Success Story began when she wrote a poem called Believe! in 2012, which was the catalyst that led to her being nominated for a national Women Inspiring Women award for her writing in both 2012 and 2013. She has also been featured in magazine publications including Soul and Spirit and Kindred Spirit and appeared on local radio.
What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?
I am very sensitive – because I am often quiet, people don’t always realise what is going on under the surface! I still remember my French teacher saying: “I thought you were one of the strong ones” when I burst into tears because I was asked a question I couldn’t answer in class. I would also quickly cover up my tears if my brothers came into the room when I was watching films such as Little Women or similar programmes that set me off!
What did the best review you ever had say about you and your work?
I received this lovely review from Allison Marlowe, founder of Global Winning Women about my poetry book I Am Unique:
“The perfect anthology of poems; Sue’s book couldn’t have arrived at a better time as the feminine energy on our planet rises and more and more women are finding their unique voice. Let these beautifully crafted words sink dep within your soul. Whether you read from cover to cover or dip in and out, this collection will gently nudge you to look creatively at the essence of your own self-expression and most heartfelt dreams.”
How did you choose a title for your book?
Interestingly, the title I Am Unique came to me a few years ago, and was intended for a memoir I meant to write. I had participated in a book planning session with book coach Jacqui Malpass, and wanted to use the picture of a clown face painting I had recently had done for the cover. The title I Am Unique came to me whilst I was gazing at the brightly-coloured daubs and smears in the picture, and also seemed to relate to the journey of self-exploration I had begun after taking early retirement from work in the Civil Service. When I decided to publish a poetry book, which includes several poems about my personal journey, including the clown face painting experience, it all fell into place!
Have you ever wished that you could be or do anything else instead of writing, and if so what?
My early aspirations as a teenager included wanting to be a DJ, and also an agony aunt! The latter was inspired by reading the Cathy and Clare column in Jackie magazine! I later discussed setting up a dating agency with a friend when we were feeling unfulfilled at work, and I also thought about working for Relate. I think this is all down to the face that I am a succour for happy endings!!
Who would you like to play you in a film of your life?
Cate Blanchett, she has a chameleon-like ability to get underneath the skin of a character.
Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?
If you find yourself resisting writing something, it is most likely that it is something you really want to write. Find a way to get started, perhaps by mind-mapping or simply journaling around your fears or the ideas you have.
Where do you find your inspiration?
The inspiration for my poems generally comes from my own experiences in life. Sometimes a word or phrase triggers something and I start writing. For example, we were having a discussion about visibility in a Facebook group of which I am a member. When I saw the dictionary definition included the word “stain” I began to write a poem called Stains on her Sweater! When the inspiration takes me, the words seem to flow…!
